Leadership at the University of Ghana (UG) continues to evolve with individuals who embody resilience, service, and courage. One name that now stands firmly in that history is Sarfo Amoako Kwame, the first Speaker of the General Assembly of the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (SRC) to come from the University of Ghana Medical School.

His story is one of persistence and determination—a journey that began long before his days at UG.

Sarfo Amoako Kwame’s foundation was shaped at Mfantsipim School, an institution known for raising disciplined young men who value leadership and service. The school’s culture of resilience and excellence played a crucial role in shaping the mindset he carries today.

When he arrived at the premier university in Ghana as a medical student, Sarfo did not focus solely on academics—he also stepped forward to serve. Like many leaders, however, his path was not without setbacks. At one point, he contested for the position of Organising Secretary of the University of Ghana Medical Association but was unsuccessful.

For many, such a moment could have ended their leadership ambitions. For Sarfo, it became the beginning of something greater.

Rather than stepping away, he remained engaged in student leadership and eventually rose to become Clubs and Societies Chairperson of the University of Ghana SRC. In that role, he worked with student groups across campus, strengthening engagement and ensuring that clubs and societies remained vibrant spaces for innovation, culture, advocacy, and student development.

Today, Sarfo Amoako Kwame has made history at the University of Ghana. His election as Speaker of the General Assembly of the UGSRC marks a significant milestone, as he becomes the first individual from the University of Ghana Medical School to occupy the Speaker’s chair.

This achievement carries deep meaning. It shows that leadership within the SRC is open to students from every academic discipline. It also demonstrates that perseverance and dedication can transform setbacks into stepping stones.

As Speaker, Sarfo Amoako Kwame holds a critical responsibility. The office requires fairness, a strong understanding of the constitution, and the ability to guide parliamentary debate while ensuring that the interests of students remain at the centre of every decision.

Students of the University of Ghana can take confidence in the fact that the Speaker’s chair is occupied by someone who understands their aspirations and challenges. Sarfo Amoako Kwame stands not only as a historic figure but also as a servant-leader committed to ensuring that the General Assembly works in the interest of the student body.

From the halls of Mfantsipim School to the demanding environment of the University of Ghana Medical School, and now to the highest parliamentary seat in the SRC, his journey is a reminder that resilience creates history.

Today at UG, that history bears the name Sarfo Amoako Kwame.
