The National President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Professor Vera Ogeh Fiador has shared insights into her journey as an academic and leader, shedding light on the delicate balance between professional growth and family life.

Speaking on the Campus Exclusive show on Radio Univers on Wednesday, 8th October, 2025, Prof. Fiador highlighted the challenges many women face in advancing to leadership positions, particularly within the academic and corporate sectors.

“There are very few women on the boards of most Ghanaian institutions, and even among those who make it that far, many face challenges balancing career and family,” she stated.

She explained that despite the competence and capability of many women, societal expectations and domestic responsibilities often force them to step back from opportunities that could propel their careers forward.

“Often, capable women step back because the demands of nurturing a family conflict with professional growth. As a result, while some achieve recognition in their fields, it often comes at the cost of personal and family stability.”

Reflecting on her own career journey, Prof. Fiador — who made history as the first female president of UTAG attributed her success to consistency, hard work, and the unwavering support of her loved ones.

“Like I said, I have had a lot of support from my spouse, my siblings, and my parents, who were always stepping in to help care for my family,” she revealed.

Her story stands as a testament to perseverance and the power of support systems in enabling women to thrive in leadership roles, even within male-dominated spaces.
