The President, H.E John Dramani Mahama, has taken steps to trigger the constitutional process involved in removing the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Gertrude Esaaba Torkornoo, from office.
This was contained in a press release from the Presidency dated March 25, 2025, informing the public that, three petitions have been received from members of the public asking for the removal of the respected Chief Justice for various stated reasons ranging from abuse of office, non-performance amongst others during her period in office thus far.
The letter, signed by the Minister in charge of Government Communications, Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu (MP), revealed that as part of the required constitutional processes, the Petitions have been reviewed by the President and subsequently sent to the Council of State for consideration and advice for the next line of action.
There have been some agitations and pressure coming from some sections of the general public on the conduct and image of the Judicial arm of government in recent times, particularly on political decisions that have been put before the Supreme Court for adjudication and the opprobrium such judgements have had on the general psyche of the population per arguments that emanated from the decisions of the courts.
It remains to be seen how this process will turn out regarding Her Ladyship Justice Torkornoo, especially as other predecessors have faced a similar fate in recent years and have come out unscathed after processes triggered in Article 146 have been initiated in those earlier cases as well.
