Charity group, ‘Precious Ladies’ has presented a number of items worth about GHC 25,000 to inmates at the Kumasi Female Prisons and Kumasi Childrens home.
The donation included toiletries, biscuits, bags of rice, gari, detergents, iodated salt, loaves of bread, sanitary pads, used clothing, cooking oil, sugar and pastries among many others.
Speaking to Univers Akan desk, Founder and Leader of Precious Ladies, Nana Ampomah Sika, who made the presentation on behalf of her colleagues expressed the collective compassion of the group to the inmates and the children, some of whom she noted were there through no fault of theirs.
She encouraged the inmates to be patient as they await the end of their sentence.
”I urge the inmates to rely on God and have confidence in Him that one day, they would finish their various terms of imprisonment to join the larger society again. Ghanaian women should be extra patient whenever they are hurt so that they won’t involve themselves in trouble.”
She also called on free individuals to demonstrate concern and care towards their fellows who find themselves in prison.
“If your fellow is in the prison, visit him or her so that they will feel at home and realise that they also are part of the society and have people caring for them.”
Superintendent of Prisons, Gertrude Serwaa Quaning received the items on behalf of the management of the female prisons.
She expressed her profound appreciation and gratitude to the precious ladies for the donations. She was appreciative of the positive thought for the female prisoners considering the national economic circumstances.
”The hard economic situation in the country and the fact that the government alone could not shoulder all the responsibility in caring for prisoners and other vulnerable groups across the country is concerning.”
She called on to more stakeholders to show support to the prisoners to improve their living conditions.
“I’m appealing to individuals of goodwill and corporate bodies to come to the aid of the prisoners, and that whatever they donated would be appreciated and that it would go a long way to improve the conditions of imates.”
