The Ghana Police Service has responded to issues of disturbances and violence that occurred during the just-ended Elections in the Ablekuma North constituency.

The development comes on the back of viral videos trending on social media of thugs belonging to both parties clashing at various polling stations whilst voting was ongoing, which resulted in injuries to some known political party activists and some journalists.

A press release dated July 12 stated that the Greater Accra Regional Command of the Service has taken notice of several incidents around some polling stations, which resulted in some injuries and disrupted the smooth conduct of voting in those areas.

The Police were on hand to respond swiftly to such lawless acts to bring normalcy and calm to the situation, to prevent any further damage to both lives and properties in the identified locations.

Steps are being taken by the Command to fully identify the perpetrators of such dastardly acts and to arrest such offenders in the coming days for subsequent prosecution.

“The Accra Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service has taken record of the skirmishes and disturbances by certain individuals during the voting in Ablekuma North on July 11, which affected the smooth flow of the exercise in affected areas.

The officers deployed for operational duties on the day took steps to restore calm and order around those areas with prompt and quick interventions on the day.

Per our standard operating procedure, we have collected evidence surrounding such criminal acts through our officers and videos from the general public, which we will be using to identify and fish out such miscreants to be dealt with appropriately by the laws of Ghana.”

The release further called on members of the general public with more information on yesterday’s disturbances to reach out to the Police through its Emergency numbers – 18555 or 191 to help in investigations into the matter.
