Berekum Chelsea striker Dominic Frimpong dies from gunshot wounds following team bus robbery attack

The Ghana Police Service has launched a manhunt for armed robbers following a deadly attack on a VIP bus carrying players and officials of Berekum Chelsea along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road.

According to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, the incident occurred on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at about 10:30 p.m. when armed men reportedly ambushed vehicles travelling on the highway.

The team’s bus, which was returning from  Ghana Premier League fixture against Samartex, veered off the road and crashed into a bush as the driver attempted to escape the attack.

During the incident, forward Dominic Frimpong sustained a fatal gunshot wound. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but was later pronounced dead while receiving treatment.

Another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, 52, was robbed of GHS 4,500. Police also retrieved two spent BB cartridges from the scene to aid investigations.

The Regional Police Command has since deployed additional personnel and crime scene experts to the area and is actively pursuing the suspects.

Authorities have assured the public that efforts are underway to apprehend the perpetrators as quickly as possible. The police have further urged residents and road users to remain calm and cooperate with ongoing investigations.
