Organised Labour has officially declared a nationwide strike, set to commence on October 10, 2024, following the government’s failure to address their demands concerning the fight against illegal mining, widely known as galamsey.
In a press statement issued on October 1, 2024, after an emergency meeting, the leadership of Organised Labour expressed deep frustration over the government’s inaction.
They had previously set an end-of-September deadline for decisive measures to be taken against galamsey, which they argue is severely damaging the environment and threatening the livelihoods of many Ghanaians.
“Following the expiration of our deadline, and the failure of government to meet our demands on illegal mining (galamsey), Organised Labour has decided to declare a nationwide strike with effect from October 10, 2024″
The statement signed by Joshua Ansah, Secretary General of the Trades Union calls on all workers across the country to stay home starting from Thursday, October 10, 2024, as part of their protest.
Organised Labour’s leadership made it clear that the strike would continue until the government takes concrete steps to curb illegal mining.
