Ghanaian musician Okyeame Kwame has revealed that Alan Kyerematen, founder of the Movement for Change, approached him three months ago with an offer to be his running mate in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
Speaking in an interview on Joy FM on November 16, 2024, Okyeame Kwame shared that Alan presented him with a list of ten criteria that he believed the musician perfectly fit, making him an ideal candidate for the role.
Despite the enticing offer, Okyeame Kwame turned it down, citing the challenges and pressures associated with a political career.
“My children are teenagers. My son is 15, my daughter is 13, so if I am going into partisan politics, I need to have prepared them for a year, I had to look at other things like security, what if other people begin to spread false propaganda about you, they go into your cupboard, dig out your ghost and bring them out, girls whose hearts you have broken, things like that,” he explained.
The award-winning artist also emphasized that his family’s well-being played a significant role in his decision.
“My family has plans; short, mid and long term plans, and being Vice President of a political party was not part of them. So as I keep telling my children to be consistent even though they can be spontaneous sometimes; how do I then now, immediately turn around and say someone just called me to be his running mate, I am going to do it, when all that I keep telling my children is to be consistent? I had to show by leadership,” he added.
Okyeame Kwame’s revelation has sparked discussions among fans and political enthusiasts, with many praising his transparency and thoughtful approach to such a life-changing decision.
While politics may not be on the horizon for Okyeame Kwame, his dedication to music and advocacy continues to inspire his fans and followers.
