Director of Research and Development at the National Vaccine Institute (NVI), Prof. Samuel Essien-Baidoo, has called for increased investment in research preparedness to ensure Africa is equipped to respond to future pandemics.

He made the remarks at the launch of the Africa Research Preparedness Network programme hosted by the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research at the Labadi Beach Hotel on Thursday 22 October, 2026.

Speaking at the launch on behalf of NVI’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Dr Faisal Nuhu, Prof. Essien-Baidoo said lessons from past pandemics and outbreaks highlight the need for proactive investment in preparedness.

“Distinguished guests, outbreaks have taught us that preparedness is not just response; it is an investment we must build together,” he said.

He also highlighted efforts by Ghana to strengthen proactive health security, citing the establishment of the NVI as evidence.

“Government of Ghana continues to place strategic importance on strengthening our health security, including vaccine research and manufacturing. The establishment of the National Vaccine Institute is a clear demonstration of this commitment,” he emphasized.

Still speaking at the launch, Prof. Essien-Baidoo noted that leadership in scientific research in West African countries is increasing, hence the need to invest in human capital to sustain research preparedness efforts.

“Africa is currently demonstrating leadership in research and vaccine development, but more work remains. We must invest in human capital, infrastructure, regulatory systems and sustainable financing to make preparedness enduring, not episodic,” he stated.
