Head of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Ghana Hospital, Cynthia Onwona-Agyeman, has identified the inadequate number of nurses at the facility as a major challenge affecting healthcare delivery.
She made these comments at the University Hospital during the celebration of the International Nurses and Midwives Day. The event was commemorated under the theme “Our Nurses, Our Future.”
Speaking to Univers News on Tuesday, 16th July 2026, after the celebration, the Head of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Ghana Hospital, Cynthia Onwona-Agyeman, highlighted staff shortages as one of the major challenges confronting the University Hospital.
She appealed to the University authorities and the Government to provide the necessary support to address the shortage of nurses and improve healthcare delivery.
“Our major challenge is with the shortage of nurses and midwives. Currently, the nurses are overwhelmed, the midwives are overwhelmed. We are not directly under the government, but if the University as well as the governments, can do something about this, can back us up with a few nurses.”
She also revealed that the programme was organised to appreciate the commitment and sacrifices of nurses working across the University community.
“It’s been a great day. The nurses are happy. This is just a short program to appreciate them, to show them our love. They’ve been working so hard with the small number of nurses that we have. They’ve been working so hard. So this is just a day to appreciate them.
We love them. For instance, this year’s theme says ‘our nurses are our future’. We want to empower our nurses to save more lives.”
Nurses and midwives remain at the heart of healthcare delivery, providing essential care and support to patients every day. The recognition of their efforts, coupled with improved working conditions and resources, will be crucial in strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system.
