The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has organized a two-day stakeholder conference in Accra aimed at addressing the challenges hindering the John Mahama-led administration’s goal of expanding universal healthcare access to Ghanaians, regardless of their location.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer of the NHIA, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, stated that the new management of the institution, as part of its reform agenda, is strengthening internal controls and streamlining revenue allocation through digitalization. He explained that digital technology is being used as a key tool to formalize all operations of the Authority in order to ensure optimal healthcare delivery to all citizens subscribed to the scheme.
“The management of the National Health Insurance Authority is mainstreaming digital technology innovations into its ecosystem to create an almost foolproof system that maximizes benefits for primary subscribers and enhances the credibility of funds disbursed to user agencies for services rendered to patients and clients across the board,” he said. “Such innovations will go a long way to dispel public doubts about the Authority’s operations while upholding the highest standards of accountability in the use of funds accruing to the NHIA to serve the best interests of all stakeholders in the healthcare value chain.”
The Guest of Honour and Chief of Staff at the Presidency, Julius Debrah, noted that the total amount of claims paid to user agencies and suppliers currently stands at GH₵2.8 billion.
“I must put on record that the Mahama-led government is very pleased with the remarkable achievements of the NHIA under the able leadership of Dr. Bampoe within these few months, during which close to GH₵2.8 billion has been spent on payments for services and healthcare delivery to subscribers of the scheme. This aligns perfectly with the government’s vision of making healthcare delivery less burdensome for all classes of Ghanaians,” he stated.
The event sought to bring together key stakeholders in Ghana’s healthcare delivery system to brainstorm and deliberate on emerging issues confronting the NHIA, more than two decades after its establishment as a holistic vehicle for achieving universal health coverage.
The conference, held from October 28–29, 2025, at the Alisa Hotel, North Ridge, Accra, was themed: “Consolidating Strategic Partnerships for a Resilient and Inclusive Health Insurance Scheme.”
