Ghanaian Afrobeats sensation King Promise isn’t waiting for the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) to crown himself king. At the extravagant 40th birthday celebration of business mogul Richard Nii-Armah Quaye last night, the Terminator hitmaker made waves by boldly declaring he’s the top contender for the coveted ‘Artiste of the Year’ title. His reasoning? He’s outworked everyone in the game—including heavyweights like King Paluta, Stonebwoy, Team Eternity Ghana, and Kweku Smoke.

“Nobody work pass we, this song was number 1 throughout the year, more than any song last year, 2024. So whether agenda or no agenda, we no dey even see dem” King Promise said confidently amidst the glitz and glamour of the star-studded event.

The assertion didn’t go unnoticed. Univers Entertainment hit the streets of the University of Ghana to see what students think of King Promise’s self-assured claim—and the reactions were as varied as the TGMA nominee list dropped.

King Promise’s declaration has set social media and campus conversations alight, with fans and critics weighing in. Univers Entertainment caught up with University of Ghana students to get their unfiltered takes.

“He has done well, but others have also done equally well. He might be right, he might not be right, because others have worked hard” said one level 100 student.

“When you see other artists, you feel like they want other artists to grow, so I think he has worked from “ argued a student . “I think King Paluta also deserves it, because makuma was a hit” another student said.

With the 26th Telecel Ghana Music Awards on the horizon, King Promise’s bold statement has turned up the heat in an already competitive ‘Artiste of the Year’ race. Will his confidence translate into a win, or will one of his rivals—King Paluta, Stonebwoy, Team Eternity Ghana, or Kweku Smoke—steal the spotlight?

Last night’s celebration at Richard Nii-Armah Quaye’s birthday bash was the perfect stage for King Promise to make his case, but the real verdict lies with the TGMA voters. For now, University of Ghana students are keeping the debate alive, and we’re here for it.
