Kofi Adams, the nominee for Minister of Sports and Recreation, appeared before Parliament’s Appointments Committee (PAC) on Thursday, January 30, 2025, following his nomination by President John Dramani Mahama. Below are the major points from his vetting session:

1. Proposal for Stipends for Ghana Premier League Players.

Adams suggested introducing stipends for players in the Ghana Premier League to address the issue of talent drain. He highlighted that low earnings often push players to seek opportunities in unstable regions. Retaining talent, he argued, would significantly improve the league’s quality.

We discussed providing allowances to keep more of our players in the country. Many leave to play in war-torn regions due to low earnings. By offering stipends, we aim to retain players and enhance the league,”he explained.

2. Modernizing Winneba Sports College for Premier League Reforms.

Adams revealed plans to upgrade the Winneba Sports College to provide technical training for coaches, which he believes will elevate the standard of the Ghana Premier League.

We’ve identified challenges facing our Premier League. Modernizing the Winneba Sports College will enable us to train coaches and improve the league technically,”he said.

3. Commitment to Excellence.

Adams assured Ghanaians of his dedication to the role, vowing not to disappoint the nation, President Mahama, or himself.

“I am honored by this nomination and promise not to let Ghanaians, President Mahama, or myself down,”he declared during the vetting.

4. Focus on Lesser-Known Sports

Adams pledged to prioritize lesser-known sports alongside football to ensure balanced development across all disciplines.

“We will place greater emphasis on lesser-known sports to promote their growth and development,”he stated.

5. Improving Sports Infrastructure Maintenance.

Adams emphasized the need to prevent the deterioration of sports facilities by improving maintenance and resource allocation. He stressed the importance of providing world-class facilities for athletes.

“Many stadiums and training centers have been neglected. To produce world-class athletes, we must ensure they have proper facilities to train and compete. We will enhance maintenance to keep our facilities in good condition and build new ones with the limited resources available,” he said.

6. Revitalizing School Sports

Adams promised to prioritize school sports by fostering collaboration between the National Sports Authority (NSA) and the Ghana Education Service (GES). He also proposed tax exemptions for companies importing sports equipment for schools and clubs.

“I am committed to taking school sports more seriously. Currently, school sports are held every two years, leaving many students without opportunities until their final year. We need to invest more resources and focus on school athletics,” he added.

With the vetting process now complete, Adams awaits the approval of the Appointments Committee before officially assuming his role as Minister for Sports and Recreation under President Mahama’s administration.
