Black Stars coach Otto Addo has confirmed that Jordan Ayew will lead Ghana as captain in their crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Angola on Friday , November 15.
Jordan takes on the captaincy role in the absence of stand-in captain Thomas Partey and Andre Ayew
Partey was forced to withdraw from the last international window squad due to medical concerns but has been in action for Arsenal in the English Premier League and the UEFA Champions League and has been excluded from the squad for the upcoming fixtures.
Kudus, took charge in the absence of the two skippers for Ghana’s doubleheader against Sudan but this time, however, Addo has handed the mantle to Jordan Ayew an experienced player who debuted for Ghana in 2010, as captain.
“I talked to [Mohammed] Kudus for him to understand that for me he just needs to learn and grow. I want him to remain the second captain alongside [Alexander] Djiku, but Jordan will take over from now,” Addo explained at a news conference.
With Ghana securing just two points from their four matches in the qualifiers and are the blink of not qualifying for the AFCON for the first time since 2004, the stakes will be high as they aim to reignite their campaign and secure a spot in the 2025 AFCON tournament.
Despite the absence of key players like Partey and Ayew, the squad remains determined although the chances of qualifying for the AFCON is minimal.
The Black Stars currently sit third in Group F and need to put a good show to secure all the six points and hope for a favorable result elsewhere as Ghana are in a delicate position of not qualifying the prestigious tournament for the first time in two decades.
