Germany has relieved Hansi Flick of his duties as head coach of the country’s men’s national football team. Flick becomes the first manager to be sacked following the creation of the role in 1926.
Flick was appointed manager of the German men’s National football team in August 2021 in the stead of World Cup winning manager Joachim Low.
Germany has won 3 out of its last 12 games, with the victories coming against Oman, Peru and Costa Rica in friendly encounters. Following a series of disappointing results and underwhelming performances, the Deutscher Fußball-Bund (DFB) have announced the dismissal of the Former Bayern Munich head coach.
President of the German Football Association, Bernd Neuendorf said:
“The committees agreed that the Men’s Senior National Team needs new impetus after the recent disappointing results. We need a spirit of optimism and confidence in our own country. For me personally, it is one of the most difficult decisions of my time in office so far. Because I appreciate Hansi Flick and his assistant coaches as football experts and people. But sporting success is the top priority for the DFB. So the decision was inevitable.”

The latest setback adds to the lackluster performances put up at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar where the Japanese edged the Germans by 2-1, eventually leading to Germany’s whimper exit from the group stages.
Flick has been relieved of his duties alongside his assistants Marcus Sorg and Dani Röhl. The 2020 sextuple winning head coach for Bayern Munich amassed 12 wins out of 25 games in his tenure as Germany’s team boss.
German professional football manager and former player, Rudi Völler is set to become the interim head coach of the team.
Germany looks to put things right and hit the ground running before the start of the European Championships on home soil in 2024.
The Germans take on France on Tuesday at the Signal Iduna park as part of friendly preparations for the EUROS next summer.
