‎The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission has cautioned the Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Richard Kofi Asiedu, over his continued use of the academic title “Professor,” despite having no legal or academic basis to do so.

‎In a letter dated July 28, 2025, addressed to the NDC Regional chairman, the commission reiterated that his use of the title violates Section 8(4)(d) of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1023), which regulates the use of academic and professional titles including “Professor,” “Doctor,” and “Chartered.”

‎The commission said it had previously warned Mr. Asiedu in a June 2 letter, directing him to stop using the title unless he could produce verifiable academic documentation. However, he has reportedly continued to publicly identify as “Professor,” including in promotional materials.

‎“The commission has observed with deep concern that Mr. Asiedu has not complied with these directives,” the letter stated. “This act is viewed by the commission as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.”

‎The commission emphasized that the matter is not politically driven but reflects its statutory responsibility to preserve the integrity of academic titles in Ghana. It urged the NDC leadership to intervene to ensure compliance.

‎“In your capacity as national chairman of the party, whose influence and guidance are widely respected, the commission respectfully appeals to you to intervene. Should he persist in using the ‘Professor’ title unlawfully, the commission may be compelled to initiate legal proceedings,” the letter said.

‎GTEC concluded by reaffirming its commitment to protecting the credibility of Ghana’s tertiary education system and preventing public misinformation.
