GPL MWK 17: Gold Stars FC surge to the top as Kotoko crush Vision, Heart of Lions stunned at home

The 2024/25 Ghana Premier League served up an electrifying set of matches, with some teams rising to the occasion and producing outstanding displays, while others defied expectations and fell short of predictions.

Bibiani Gold Stars FC moved to the top of the table with a commanding 3-0 victory over Accra Lions on Sunday. Samuel Attah Kumi was the star of the match, netting a hat-trick with goals in the 14th, 44th, and 46th minutes, securing the Miners’ biggest away win of the season and their ninth victory overall.

Meanwhile, Asante Kotoko delivered a dominant performance, thrashing Vision FC 4-1. Kwame Opoku led the charge with a brace, opening the scoring in the 6th minute. Despite Nana Akwesi Amoah equalizing for Vision FC in the 22nd minute, Kotoko regained control with goals from Peter Amidu, Opoku again, and Saaka Dauda, moving them to third place with 31 points, just two behind Gold Stars FC.

Defending champions FC Samartex 1996 were held to a goalless draw by Hearts of Oak at the Nsenkyire Arena, leaving Hearts in fifth place and Samartex in mid-table.

In a surprising turn of events, Heart of Lions suffered their first home defeat of the season, losing 1-0 to Nations FC at the Kpando Stadium. Di Boris Djangone’s 82nd-minute goal sealed the win for Nations FC, pushing them to second place and dropping Lions to fourth.

Elsewhere, Nsoatreman FC secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Karela United, thanks to Eric Osei Bonsu’s 52nd-minute penalty.

Berekum Chelsea edged out Medeama SC 2-1 in a dramatic finish, with Zackaria Fuseini scoring the winner in stoppage time.

Basake Holy Stars and Aduana FC played out a 1-1 draw, while Legon Cities boosted their survival hopes with a 3-0 win over Dreams FC.

Legon Cities humiliated Dreams FC 3-0 at the University of Ghana Stadium to make sure they survive relegation. Goals from Fredrick Akatuk, Frank Akoto and Kabu Agyemang Raymond were enough to hand Dreams their 7th defeat of the season.

Bechem United could not live up to expectations from their home fans in the Premier League after hard fought 0-0 stalemate at Young Apostles in the Bono derby.
