10-man Hearts of Oak shock Kotoko to climb to second on league standings

The 2025/26 Ghana Premier League Matchweek 22 delivered drama, resilience and defining moments — none bigger than in Kumasi, where Accra Hearts of Oak produced a gritty 1–0 victory over fierce rivals Asante Kotoko in the latest edition of the Super Clash at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

Hearts struck early and held firm under immense pressure to secure a statement win that breathes fresh life into their title pursuit.

The decisive moment arrived in the 14th minute when Baba Adamu rose highest to power home a well-delivered corner, stunning the home crowd and sending the traveling Phobian faithfuls into celebration.

The contest took a dramatic turn in the 28th minute when Emmanuel Amankwah was shown a straight red card, reducing Hearts to ten men for over an hour.

Kotoko pressed relentlessly, throwing numbers forward in search of an equaliser, but they found Benjamin Asare in inspired form.

The Hearts goalkeeper produced a commanding display between the posts, repelling wave after wave of attacks to preserve the slender advantage.

The result lifts Hearts into second place on 39 points, five behind league leaders Medeama SC, while Kotoko remain on 35 points and facing mounting pressure.

At the summit, Medeama were held to a 1–1 draw by Aduana FC in a heavyweight clash that stretched across two days after torrential rain interrupted proceedings. When play resumed, neither side could find a late breakthrough, ensuring Medeama stay top with 44 points as the title race tightens.

Elsewhere, home sides largely stamped their authority. Bibiani Gold Stars delivered a commanding 3–0 victory over Basake Holy Stars at Dun’s Park, with Kelvin Oppong and Prince Owusu Kwabena doing the damage.

Swedru All Blacks edged out FC Samartex 1–0 thanks to a decisive second-half penalty, while Berekum Chelsea maintained their impressive home form with a 2–1 triumph against Heart of Lions.

The relegation picture also shifted significantly. Hohoe United ended a nine-game winless run with a spirited 2–1 comeback victory over Nations FC, offering renewed hope in their survival bid.

In contrast, Dreams FC suffered late heartbreak at home as Karela United snatched a dramatic 1–0 win in the dying moments.

Bechem United returned to winning ways with a narrow 1–0 success over Young Apostles, while Vision FC boosted their survival hopes with an emphatic 3–0 away victory against Eleven Wonders, leaving the latter rooted to the foot of the table.

Matchweek 22 may well prove a turning point in both the title race and the relegation battle.

Hearts of Oak’s defiant triumph in Kumasi has reignited belief among their supporters, Medeama remain steady at the summit, and the fight for survival continues to intensify as the season enters its decisive stretch.
