The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has implemented a major budget cut for the Black Stars’ upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Chad and Mali — trimming the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) initial 2 million request down to 1.3 million.

This decision, backed by final approval from the Presidency, follows a detailed review of the GFA’s proposed expenditure.

The move is part of ongoing efforts to ensure prudent financial management in national team operations while maintaining competitive standards on the international stage.

“The estimate submitted for Match Day 7 (Chad game only) was over $1 million,” he said.

“After review, the Ministry approved about $860k. The ticket for players and officials,  we have a flat unit for all players and officials, but some spend more, while others spend less.

“The flat amount was $6,000 per ticket for all 28 players and officials. Flight tickets presented to the Sports Ministry are always higher than what is required. The Ministry, since I took over, has reviewed and even used alternative means to buy the tickets,” he added.

Additionally, Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams revealed that his ministry operates without a set budget until it receives official approval from the Presidency.

“The Ghana Football Association submits what I will describe as estimates, which the Ministry forwards to the Presidency after analysing its details,” Adams explained.

He also disclosed that Black Stars technical team members receive just 50% of the players’ winning bonuses, with the rest contingent on the team qualifying for major tournaments.

“The Black Stars technical team members are paid half of the winning bonuses given to players,” he said.

“If the team qualifies for a major tournament, the remaining 50% will be paid. If they fail, they forfeit the money,” he added.

The adjustments mean the final approved budget stands at $856,890 for the Chad match and $463,600 for the Mali match, compared to the GFA’s original combined request of $2,053,240.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars have safely arrived in N’Djamena, Chad, as preparations continue for their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Otto Addo’s men will face the Chad national team on Thursday, September 4, in what is expected to be an important Group fixture on the road.
