In a significant move to address the persistent issue of illegal mining, the government has formed a high-level ad-hoc ministerial committee.

This was announced in a press release by the Ministry of Information on September 13, 2024.

In the statement, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo tasked this five-member committee with a crucial mandate: to engage stakeholders and assess the government’s ongoing efforts in fighting illegal mining activities across Ghana.

The committee comprised key ministers from relevant sectors, such as Minister for National Security (Chair): Hon. Albert Kan-Dapaah, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources: Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor, Minister for Defense: Hon. Dominic Nitiwul, Minister for Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions: Hon. Ignatius Baffour Awuah and Minister for Information: Hon. Fatimatu Abubakar.

This strategic selection of ministers emphasized the government’s commitment to a different approach to tackling the illegal mining challenge. The committee was expected to leverage the diverse expertise of its members to assess current schemes and propose enhanced measures to fight this pressing issue.

The formation of this ad-hoc committee signaled a renewed focus on addressing illegal mining, which had been a significant concern for environmental sustainability and economic governance in Ghana.
