Parliament has given the green light to a $338 Million loan for the reconstruction and expansion of Accra-Tema Motorway.

In a significant development, Chairman of the Roads and Transport Committee, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, has revealed that a $338 million loan earmarked for the reconstruction and expansion of the Accra-Tema Motorway project has been approved by Parliament.

The ambitious venture, set to span a concession period of 30 years, aims to comprehensively rehabilitate and expand crucial sections of the motorway. With an estimated construction timeline of 36 months, meticulous plans are in place to ensure the successful execution of this transformative infrastructure project.

“The committee observed that 1% of the revenue accrued from the project will be given to the Ministry of Roads and Highways. Mr. Speaker, the motorway project’s concession period is expected to be for 30 years and it is expected to be completed in 36 months.”

“Mr. Speaker, it is a 10 -lane project redevelopment that we are doing; we are going to expand the lanes to be 10-lane with 8 interchanges and various sections of the tunnel. The first branch, meaning the motorway, has 10 lanes that are hitting the total passenger motorway. The total passenger cycle will also be managed and properly constructed, such that the 10 lanes coming from the tunnel will hit the total passenger, that there wouldn’t be any congestion and any problems going forward.”

Prompted by the alarming deterioration of the Accra-Tema Motorway, authorities have taken a momentous decision to embark on an extensive initiative. The rapid decline of the motorway has not only resulted in chronic traffic congestion but also posed a mounting threat of accidents.

In a bid to address these pressing concerns, a comprehensive plan has been set in motion to rehabilitate and expand critical sections of the motorway, promising to alleviate traffic woes and enhance overall safety.

“The terminal motorway, which is for 50 years, particularly the concrete part of the property or the structure, is such that you need the capacity of a contractor that is no doubt. And therefore, the contractor, the reformer contractor, demonstrating all the confidence and efficiency for this project is appropriate.”
