The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to reinstate Doughlas Haruna Yakubu, the interdicted headmaster of Ghana Senior High School (GHANASCO). The Association has stated that the interdiction was unjustified, as no investigation had been conducted into the issue at the time.
In an interview with Accra-based Citi FM on April 18, GNAT General Secretary, Thomas Musah, strongly criticized GES for taking such a decision.
“Why should you in a rush go and issue a statement interdicting the person, putting the person in the public for ridicule? Do you know you have humiliated the head? You have broken his confidence and that, you don’t handle professionals like that. “
In response to the recent controversy over a video circulating on social media showing students using toilet cubicles as dormitories, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that it is conducting a thorough investigation. The Regional Director of Education has asked both the head and senior housemaster of the school to step aside to allow for this investigation to take place.
Despite the allegations made in the video, the headmaster, Doughlas Haruna Yakubu, has dismissed the footage as trumped-up. He has insisted that the school has enough space to accommodate all its students and that there is no need for students to be kept in toilet cubicles. Yakubu believes that the video was taken with malicious intent to cause public disaffection for the school.
The fact-finding delegation sent by the GES is expected to ascertain the truth or otherwise of the allegation. In the meantime, many are calling for calm and a fair investigation to be conducted to ensure that justice is served for all parties involved.
