The Ghana Health Service has issued a stark warning concerning the health implications of the ongoing harsh weather conditions in the country.

Various reports indicate February as a month being marked by dryness, dust, and a high Air Quality Index from the Environmental Protection Agency. With forecasts of even hotter conditions in March and April by the Ghana Meteorological Agency, the GHS in a press release dated February 25, underscored the heightened risk of respiratory illnesses and meningitis among the populace.

In response, the GHS is advocating for precautionary measures, urging individuals to limit outdoor activities, wear face masks, stay hydrated, and adhere to prescribed medications, especially for those with chronic respiratory conditions like asthma.

The Service further emphasized that the dry and hot weather conditions in the northern part of Ghana particularly can lead to an increased risk of meningitis as evident with the reported cases of meningitis. However, there are no outbreaks in the country.

The GHS also highlighted the importance of prompt medical attention and reassured the public of its commitment to swift response and containment efforts.

“It must be noted that, treatment is available for all these conditions including Meningitis and therefore persons with fever and neck stiffness should report immediately to the nearest health facility. The GHS assures the public that it is working diligently to promptly identify and respond to any potential outbreaks during this period of harsh weather conditions and beyond.”
