The President of the Ghana Chess Association, Philip Elikem Ameku has revealed that a prize of Ghc10,000.00 will be awarded to the winner of an upcoming chess championship.
The 12th Presidents’ Cup Chess Championships is scheduled to take place from August 25 to August 28, 2023, at the Ghana College Of Physicians And Surgeons at Ridge, Accra.
The three-day tournament promises a thrilling experience for players of all levels, whether seasoned chess players or beginners.
In an exclusive interview with UniversSports, Mr. Ameku highlighted the plans put in place for the forthcoming championship.
“We together with our partners Reiss & Co. company limited are presenting an amount of Ghc10,000.00 as the prize fund of this tournament. We have arranged with the owners of [Ghana College Of Physicians And Surgeons] to make sure that everything that is required for the successful holding of the event will be in place, and then we look forward to a massive participation by chess players and chess lovers from the length and breadth of the country.”
Mr Amerku further disclosed a lineup of events his outfit will be organising in the final quarter of the year.
“For the final quarter of the year, we will do the youth championship which will take place in October at the Tema International School. We are partnering with Tema International School to host that tournament then after that we hold our annual national championship. This will take place in two phases namely; phase one which is an open tournament and phase two will be an invitational one. With phase two we invite the top 5 seeded players in the country who will be merged with the winners of phase one which is an open tournament so that we have a blend of the experienced and the new up-and-coming stars. These are the two major events we are planning for the rest of the year.”
The 12th President’s Cup aims to encourage chess growth in Ghana and inspire the sport’s future stars to achieve new heights of brilliance. The competition will be conducted in accordance with the guidelines established by the Ghana Chess Association and the International Chess Federation (FIDE).
