Provost of the College of Humanities (CoH) at the University of Ghana (UG), Professor Joseph Awetori Yaro, has stated that Ghana’s independence itself was an act of going beyond boundaries.
Speaking at the 9th School of Social Sciences International Conference, held under the theme “Indigenous Intelligence Beyond Boundaries: Reclaiming Ghanaian Identity for Innovation, Inclusion and Climate Resilience in the Digital Age,” Professor Awetori Yaro explained that going beyond boundaries means recognising that although Ghana is an independent nation, it still operates within a global network of mutual dependence.
“It is clear that independence itself was an act of going beyond boundaries. It was a refusal to accept imposed limitations and an assertion of identity,” he said.
“Therefore, what does it mean to go beyond boundaries in such a world? It means recognising that although Ghana stands proudly independent, we remain embedded in a global network of mutual dependence,” he added.
Professor Awetori Yaro further noted that Ghana must acknowledge that research, teaching, and scholarship in the country should not only respond to national priorities but also contribute to solving shared global challenges.
“Furthermore, it means acknowledging that our research, our teaching, and our scholarship must respond not only to national priorities but also to shared global challenges,” he said.
