A group of Ghanaians living in the United States staged a protest in New York on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, as President Akufo-Addo delivered his speech at the United Nations General Assembly.

The protesters voiced their concerns over the recent detainment of demonstrators during the Democracy Hub protest, calling for the immediate release of those held.

Carrying placards, the demonstrators highlighted issues of human rights violations and urged the international community to pay attention to the political situations in Ghana.

They expressed frustration with the government’s handling of peaceful protests, emphasizing the need for reforms to protect the right to free assembly and protest.

“Stop illegal mining in Ghana! Stop illegal mining in Ghana! Release the protesters now!”

“Stop holding them without legal representation. Stop holding them without medical attention. Stop holding them without food and water.”

“Ghana’s president is involved in illegal mining. Arresting protesters without legal representation. Holding them for days without food and water. And he’s here talking about environmental issues.”
