A section of the Ghanaian public have been sharing their thoughts on their memories of the late Ghanaian football star Christian Atsu.
Most people recounted his successful outing for the Black Stars at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nation in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. Others touted his role in Ghana’s qualification to the 2014 World Cup.
Atsu was officially confirmed dead on Saturday after been trapped under the rubbles for nearly 12 days following the Earthquake in Turkey.
In an exclusive interview with Univers Sports most people recounted his successful outing for the black stars during AFCON tournaments while Others touted his role in Ghana’s qualification to the 2014 World Cup.
One Ghanaian feels Atsu gave Ghana a performance to remember with his spectacular game against Egypt in Kumasi
“I remember Atsu quite well when I first saw him on the pitch at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. It was our penultimate tie with Egypt for the spot at the world. It was in 2013, a rainy afternoon as well. His dazzling skills on the right wing is something I can barely forget as we thrashed Egypt by 6-1. The number 7 shirted young man with his hairstyle “Ameley”. May his beautiful soul rest in peace”. he told UniversSports.
Atsu, in the opinion of another, was Ghana’s AFCON 2015 revelation.
“We had already seen his exploits but the 2015 AFCON where he made all the headlines for the good reasons was something we could cherish for eternally. Winning the Best player of the tournament even though Ghana failed to win. He also scored the goal of the tournament. it was just unfortunate that we couldn’t climax everything with winning the trophy” Kwabena said.
Another person lauded Christian Atsu for his charitable endeavors.
“I remember him for his mesmerizing display against Cote D’Ivoire, his curler that struck the post was a great seen to behold. Some of us will remember him for his philanthropic works as well, as he sought to change the lives of condemned prisoners. It’s just sad we had to lose such a talent”.
Richard recollected the role he played when Ghana thumped Lesotho.
“I don’t really remember the game but it was at the Accra Sports stadium when Ghana were 8-2 victors, that was the first time I saw Atsu. He was magnificent, he played very well that all of us likened him to Messi. His death has resulted in whole lot of positive commentary about his life. He will forever remain in our hearts”. His body was flown to Ghana via Turkish Airways, with his coffin draped in the nations colours.
The government of Ghana has assured of a state burial for the former Ghanaian international, during a statement read by the Vice president Dr Mahamudu Bawumia at the short ceremony held yesterday at the Kotoka International Airport to receive the mortal remains of Christian Atsu.
