Director General of the Ghana Health Service , Dr Patrick Kuma Aboagye has revealed that over 500 nurses left the shores of Ghana for greener pastures abroad last year.
Dr Kuma Aboagye indicated that his outfit has instituted a raft of measures to recruit and groom additional nurses to fill in the gap left by the huge numbers that left the health system in 2022.
Speaking at a press engagement , Dr Aboagye intimated that there are plans to recruit more nurses in the next two years to augment the staff strength of nurses in the public health system of the country to ensure quality healthcare throughout the country.
” As a country , we have lost a huge number of highly skilled and qualified nurses in our system to enticing offers from abroad , but after some deliberations , we have initiated steps to recruit more personnel to replace the gaps identified in the system to close the yawning gap that exists over the next 2 years”.
The country lost about 525 nurses to foreign countries with better salaries and compensation .
He also added that the concept of Universal Health Coverage by the year 2030 , remains a strong point of call for health service provider to meet better and efficient health care delivery across board.
” The GHS has revisited the strategy to consolidate primary healthcare delivery and deepen the needed collaboration with development partners towards remodeling the healthcare system in Ghana to be patient and results oriented”.
