President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Edwin Simon Okraku, has announced a comprehensive welfare package aimed at significantly improving conditions for referees across the country’s top football competitions.
Speaking at the 31st Ordinary Session Congress at the E.T. Mensah Hall of the Ghanaman Centre of Excellence on Tuesday, 12th August, 2025 , he stressed that referees would be at the forefront in the upcoming season, with their welfare placed among the GFA’s highest priorities.
“Our referees deserve more attention, they deserve our support, and their natural well-being is very, very important,” he said. “This year, we are determined to ensure their welfare is properly taken care of,” he said,
Following a review of operational needs, the GFA Executive Committee has approved new working conditions for referees in the Ghana Premier League (GPL), Division One League (DOL), and Women’s Premier League (WPL).
The new insurance policy for referees will include:
Group life cover
Critical illness cover
Permanent disability cover
Medical expenses
Workman’s compensation
Additional benefits will cover spouse benefits, child benefits, hearing benefits, and funeral support.
The initiative marks one of the most comprehensive welfare packages for referees in Ghana’s football history, underscoring the GFA’s commitment to raising officiating standards and safeguarding the well-being of its match officials.
