GFA announces three-year extension of FA Cup sponsorship with MTN

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and Telecommunications giants,  MTN Ghana have agreed to extend the long-standing sponsorship arrangement for the FA Cup for three more seasons.

The connection between the GFA and MTN begun in the 2010-11 season and was renewed in 2013 and 2017, 2020. The enthralling MTN FA Cup had gone on to encompass 18 Premier League clubs, 48 Division One League clubs, and 44 Division Two League clubs from the ten Regional Football Associations, for a total of 110 clubs.

The 18 Premier League clubs participate in the main competition at the Round of 64 stage after the Division One League clubs and the Regional Division Two League clubs compete in the preliminary round. The winner of the MTN FA Cup advances to the CAF Confederation Cup competition and is awarded a massive trophy, money, and merchandise from MTN.

In the 2022/23 MTN FA Cup, the winners, Dreams FC received GHC 80,000, with the runner-up, King Faisal receiving GHC 30,000 for making it to the competition’s finals.
According to the Chairman of the MTN FA Cup, Wilson Arthur, the victor who automatically qualifies to represent Ghana in next year’s CAF Confederations Cup will receive an additional GHC 100,000.

Accra Hearts of Oak are the most successful club in the FA cup, having won the competition on 10 occasions, followed by rivals Asante Kotoko who have won the cup on nine occasions.

The 2023/24 MTN FA Cup competition which kickstarted on October 27-30, 2023, had already seen early elimination of premier league clubs like Accra Hearts of Oak, GPL leaders Aduana Stars and FC Samartex the round 64.

The ‘Still Believe’ lads are the current holders of the title and are currently participants in this season’s CAF confederation cup Group stage fixtures.

Dreams FC are looking to secure their first win in the CAF Confederation Cup after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Club Africain in their first Group game last Sunday. The match against Nigeria’s Ravers is set to kick off at 16:00 at the Kumasi-Baba Yara Sports Stadium .
