66th University of Ghana SRC President Frank Tsikata

‎The former president of the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC), Frank Tsikata, has alleged that the current SRC administration misled students about the ongoing issues surrounding charges on the Telecel SIM card package.

His comments come in response to a July 1 letter from the SRC, which stated that the current administration had to consult university management to clarify the details of the initiative. The letter further attributed the policy to past administrations and emphasized that the current executives only inherited the arrangement.

‎Speaking in an interview on Radio Univers’ Campus Exclusive, Tsikata claimed the SRC was fully aware of the circumstances surrounding the charges but failed to communicate the complete truth to students.

‎“I would boldly say that everything the SRC put out in their letter does not represent the true reality on the ground,” he said. “They were fully aware of the conditions surrounding the data package but deliberately chose not to present the full facts to students. Before I left office, I compiled several files. Unless the president didn’t open those files, every single detail was there.”

‎Tsikata also stated that the issue of the Telecel bundle was not new and had been discussed during previous administrations.

‎”The conversation about this Telecel bundle started during Boakye’s time. Every single leader who has been through the process—attending GA meetings, visiting our ExeCom, and following news here at Radio Univers—knew about it. For them to now claim they are not fully aware of what’s happening is a fallacy. They’re just throwing dust into the eyes of the students.”

‎Tsikata also revealed that Telecel is actively working on improving its network infrastructure on campus to address connectivity concerns. He urged the current student leadership to halt “blame games” and instead focus on the positive aspects of the package.

‎”At the university level, I know people are talking about network issues and the charges associated with the Telecel data package. Telecel is currently undertaking upgrades to its towers on campus, and making improvements, I think we should focus on the benefits of the package rather than creating confusion and intentionally inciting people against the brand.”

‎The former president’s statements suggest a significant lack of transparency from the current SRC, leaving many students feeling misled about the “free” SIM card and data package.
