Deputy Director of Educate Africa Institute, Wisdom Matey has called for the law to criminalize deceit from politicians.
He was speaking on the score of many uncompleted projects of the government.
He made emphasis on the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s vision to replace textbooks with laptops in Senior High Schools across the country.
The Vice President revealed that the initiative is part of Ghana’s digitalisation Agenda.
The announcement was made at the 60th Anniversary celebration of the Hohoe Evangelical Presbyterian Senior High School.
The revelation, however has sparked criticisms from various stakeholders in the Educational sector including Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and Africa Education Watch.
They have expressed their skepticism in the government to fully roll out the aforementioned policy with the ‘one teacher one laptop’ policy still pending.
In an interview on Campus Exclusive, Wisdom Matey suggested the creation of a law which criminalises politicians and government officials.
“There should be a [law] that ensures that no one comes out with [incredible] promises just to lure people…so if our politicians get to know that there is a criminal law saying that any unachievable and unrealistic promise that is not bounded by time is a criminal activity, our politicians will be more careful in what they promise us.”
On the Vice President’s initiative, Mr. Matey had earlier described the move as ‘immature’ and ‘premature’.
According to him, government had not strategically analyzed the initiative to ensure its feasibility amidst the many challenges of the nation.
He hence advised the government to make careful considerations before attempting to implement a policy, especially in the education sector.
“Before any policy is rolled out in the education sector, we need to test the policy and pilot the policy to know if it s feasible, specific and can be measured, but there are lot of issues confronting the country and the initiative to provide one student with a tablet is also yet to be achieved.”
