This year’s general elections have been marked by significantly low voter turnout across the country.

The Electoral Commissioner, Jean Mensah, before announcing the results of the 2024 presidential election at the national collation center, revealed that voter turnout stood at 60.9% across 267 constituencies.

This represents a sharp decline from the 2020 elections, which recorded a turnout of 78.89%.

A regional analysis shows a noticeable decrease in voter participation compared to the last election. In the Ashanti Region, a key stronghold, voter turnout dropped from 83% in 2020 to 56% in 2024, representing a significant decline of 26.8%. Similarly, the Volta Region, another stronghold, saw its voter turnout decrease from 79% in 2020 to 60% in 2024, a 19.5% drop.

Other regions that previously recorded high voter turnout in 2020 also experienced declines. The Northern Region, which had 89% in 2020, dropped to 74%. The Oti Region saw a reduction from 86% to 68%, the Western North Region fell from 83% to 65%, the Ahafo Region declined from 85% to 69%, and the North East Region recorded a steep drop from 86% to 56%.

The marked decline in voter turnout across these regions signals a growing trend of voter apathy, which has characterized the 2024
