In a Facebook post on Thursday, December 19, Director of Elections and IT for Ghana’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) party, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of bias and collusion with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Dr. Boamah’s comments came in response to a press conference earlier that day, where EC Chairperson Jean Mensa addressed concerns over the declaration of parliamentary results in nine constituencies. Dr. Boamah described Mensa’s press conference as “useless,” alleging that she has been “instructed by NPP to dilute the 2/3 majority of NDC.” However, Boamah asserted that “she will fail!”
In his strongly worded post, Dr. Boamah warned the EC that it “must not tempt us beyond our endurance” and that the NDC “mean business!” He demanded that the EC provide “pinksheets” – official election result forms – that show the NDC won in all constituencies where the declaration was not completed.
Accusing the EC of avoiding “critical questions” at an emergency IPAC (Inter-Party Advisory Committee) meeting, Dr. Boamah’s labeled the situation as “shameful” and called on supporters to keep a close “EAGLEEYES” on the “criminal Electoral Commission and the outgoing NPP administration.”
The NDC’s allegations of bias and manipulation of the electoral process are likely to heighten political tensions in Ghana as the country awaits the final results and declaration of the 2024 general elections. Observers will be closely monitoring the EC’s actions and the NDC’s response in the coming days.
