The Democratic Republic of Congo secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Benin in their opening Group D fixture at the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025, claiming an important early advantage.
Theo Bongonda proved decisive, scoring the only goal of the contest in the 16th minute at the Al Medina Stadium in Rabat.
The Spartak Moscow winger capitalised on a defensive lapse, pouncing on a loose long ball to fire home and put the Leopards ahead.
DR Congo thought they had doubled their advantage shortly after the break when Cédric Bakambu headed in from close range following a cross from Nathanaël Mbuku.
However, after a lengthy VAR review, the goal was ruled out for offside, keeping Benin in the contest.
Despite Benin’s late push for an equaliser, the Leopards held firm to secure all three points in front of a largely supportive crowd.
The victory places DR Congo top of Group D ahead of the group’s second fixture, which sees 2021 champions Senegal face Botswana later on Tuesday in Tangier.
Semi-finalists at the previous AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, Sébastien Desabre’s side—featuring the likes of West Ham United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Sunderland midfielder Noah Sadiki—will be aiming to go beyond their recent achievements as they also pursue qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
