Day two of the three-day “#FreeTheCitizens” protest is in full swing in Ghana, as citizens rally under the banners“#FreeTheCitizens” and “#SayNoToGalamsey.”
The demonstrations, which began on Thursday, October 3, aim to draw attention to the devastating effects of illegal mining, locally known as “Galamsey,” that have ravaged the environment and disrupted communities nationwide.
Protesters are calling for urgent government action, demanding stricter enforcement of mining regulations and stronger protection of natural resources.
The harmful impacts of Galamsey, including pollution, deforestation, and threats to water supplies, have been at the forefront of their concerns.
Today, Friday, October 4, demonstrators are set to petition the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, urging immediate intervention. The protest will culminate on Saturday, October 5, with a large gathering at Independence Square, where participants will not only continue their calls for action but also hold a vigil to honor those affected by the consequences of illegal mining.
Protestants include environmental activists, community leaders, and concerned citizens, united in their mission to safeguard Ghana’s natural resources and promote sustainable practices.
In a show of solidarity, several working unions have declared strikes, joining the movement’s demand for an end to Galamsey.
