The Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), in collaboration with the National Youth Authority, conducted a pivotal youth sensitization workshop ahead of Ghana’s 2024 general elections.

The event, held on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, emphasized the critical role of youth in fostering peaceful elections and active participation in national decision-making.

Addressing the participants, Nana Ama Nartey, Communication Lead at CDD-Ghana, stressed the importance of embracing diverse viewpoints and verifying information before sharing on social media. She emphasized that these steps are crucial for maintaining peace throughout Ghana’s upcoming elections.

“For peace to prevail before, during, and after this election, the youth must practice tolerance for differing views and be diligent in verifying information to combat misinformation.”

She also warned of the dangers of social media in spreading false information, which could potentially disrupt a peaceful environment.

“The youth must be careful about social media engagement and the dissemination of misinformation.”

Speaking with Univers News, Hon. Daniel Kwame Nyarkoh, the 2nd Deputy Clerk of the National Youth Parliament, called on young people nationwide to prioritize the nation’s peace over any political agenda. He urged the youth not to serve the interests of political parties at the expense of the country’s stability.

“As a citizen of this country we have a role to play in keeping the sustained peace of this country let’s not do any politicians’ interest and destroy our only home. Why would we want to if we destroy the country because of party A or B?”

The workshop, part of CDD-Ghana’s ‘I AM AWARE’ initiative, educated young people on their crucial role in fostering peaceful participation in the upcoming general elections.

Key topics included responsible social media usage, active involvement in governance, and measures to prevent election-related violence, with over 200 young participants in attendance.
