Union Sportive de la Médina d’Alger (USM Alger) of Algeria have beaten Egyptian club Al Ahly last night Friday at the King Fahd International Stadium in Saudi Arabia to win the CAF Super Cup 23 title.
The Algerian team defeated the Egyptian club by a score of 1-0; Zineddine Belaïd of the Algerian side scored the only goal of the game in the 43rd minute from the penalty spot to secure victory for USM Alger.
Prior to the titanic fixture, Egyptian side Al Ahly were the favorites, given their past experiences in the competition with 11 appearances, 8 wins and 2 losses under their belt in the annals of the Super Cup. They are also dubbed the most successful club in the competition and the world at large. On the other hand, the victorious Alger Team had just made their debut for the cup title for this season.
USM Alger is the second Algerian club to lift the CAF Super Cup title after ES Setif in 2015.
Al Ahly were winners of last season’s CAF Champions League while the Algers clinched the CAF Confederations Cup.
One must also consider that the continental giants in African football are holders of the CAF Champions League Title (Al Ahly) and CAF Confederations Cup title (USM Alger).
However, USM Alger joins the likes of Accra Hearts of Oak, Mamelodi Sundowns, ES Setif, Mas Fes, Orlando Pirates, Espérance Tunis, Renaissance de Berkane, Wydad Cassablanca, Asec Mimosas and African Sports as one time winners of the CAF super cup.
