As the academic semester gains momentum at the University of Ghana (UG), students are increasingly relying on specialized campus facilities to bridge the gap between classroom learning and personal development.
From the Balme Knowledge Commons to the Student Hotspot Comfort Zones, the growing use of these resources reflects the university’s broader goal of providing a holistic and transformative student experience.
In interviews with Univers News, students shared how these facilities have become central to their academic progress and overall well-being, helping them improve performance while developing into well-rounded individuals.
For a Level 200 student, the library became the turning point in her academic journey.
“After my first semester results came, they were not good, and I told myself, ‘This cannot be my life,’” she said. “I decided to start using the library, and it has helped me a lot. Now, I use it more often than I ever used to.”
The library has also emerged as a vital space for non-resident students, many of whom lack access to nearby hostel rooms and quiet study environments.
“I don’t have a place to study when I have gaps between my classes,” another Level 200 student explained. “So I go to the library to revise for my next lecture or prepare for tests. Without it, I wouldn’t have a convenient space to stay productive.”
While libraries cater to academic needs, the University of Ghana Athletic Oval provides students with a necessary outlet for mental refreshment. As academic pressure increases, many students turn to physical activity to maintain focus and balance.
A Level 300 student who regularly uses the basketball courts on weekends described the Athletic Oval as a key contributor to his academic performance.
“I go there to refresh my mind and take a break from my usual routine,” he noted.
This view was echoed by another student who balances study sessions at the Hotspot Comfort Zone—known for its relaxed and comfortable atmosphere—with exercise at the sports facilities.
“The Hotspot helps me study better, but the Athletic Oval helps me clear my mind whenever I feel exhausted,” he said. “Every Saturday morning, I go there to exercise.”
Whether for focused academic work or much-needed mental breaks, these facilities continue to form the backbone of student life at UG.
By combining intensive study with physical wellness, students are successfully translating academic theory into a balanced and fulfilling university experience.
