Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal, has won the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries in the Ayawaso East constituency elections.
The primaries, held on February 7, 2026, were conducted to select a replacement for the late Ahmed Naser Toure, the sitting Member of Parliament for the constituency, who passed away earlier in 2026. This comes ahead of the by-election scheduled by the Electoral Commission for March 3, 2026.
The high-stakes election was held amid heightened tensions, as Baba Jamal emerged as one of the strongest contenders, alongside the widow of the late MP, Hajia Amina Adam, and other aspirants.
The polls, which were characterised by allegations of vote-buying schemes allegedly perpetrated by some aspirants, were conducted under tight security. Delegates thronged the designated centres to cast their ballots for their preferred candidates.
At the end of the polls, the results declared by Electoral Commission officials were as follows:
- Mohammed Ramne – 88 votes
- Hajia Amina Adam – 399 votes
- Baba Jamal – 431 votes
- Dr Yakubu Azimdow – 45 votes
- Najib Sani – 1 vote
The party has also served notice that it will conduct an independent investigation into the allegations of vote-buying and take the appropriate actions in the days ahead.
