Authorities of Agona Swedru Senior High School in the Central Region have suspended 25 students indefinitely following a violent altercation stemming from a same-sex relationship proposal, 3news.com reports.
The incident is said to have occurred after a male student allegedly proposed a romantic relationship to another male student, who rejected the proposal.
The student who was the target of the alleged proposal reportedly shared the encounter with his colleagues, who advised him to accept the request as a ruse to lure the other student into a setup.
On the day of the arranged meeting, a group of students — said to be friends of the student who received the proposal — ambushed and physically assaulted the student who initiated the idea.
In retaliation, the assaulted student informed his friends, leading to reprisal attacks on campus. The situation escalated into a broader clash involving multiple students, prompting school authorities to take disciplinary action.
In an interaction with the press, the Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Golda Andam, confirmed that 25 students have been suspended following internal investigations into the incident.
“After the disturbing event, school authorities thoroughly investigated the root cause of the clashes and gave all involved students a fair hearing before deciding on disciplinary action to maintain order on campus,” Mrs. Andam stated.
She explained that although the students have been suspended, they would be allowed to return under parental escort to write their examinations.
“This is to reinforce that, under the guidelines of the Ghana Education Service, there is no room for such brazen acts of indiscipline in our schools,” she emphasised.
Mrs. Andam added that the school is working with relevant stakeholders to ensure the affected students are supported to continue their education.
She urged all students to remain disciplined and adhere to school regulations to avoid similar punitive measures in the future.
