Ablekuma North votes today in crucial parliamentary rerun

Voters in the Ablekuma North constituency are casting their ballots today in a parliamentary rerun aimed at resolving a dispute that has left the seat vacant since the 2024 general elections.

The rerun, taking place across 19 polling stations, follows a legal and electoral impasse that began after the December 2024 polls. The Electoral Commission initially struggled to finalize results due to disagreements between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over results from several polling stations.

A court later directed the EC to conclude the process, but citing irregularities in 19 stations, the Commission opted to rerun voting in those areas.

The election has stirred controversy within the NPP. Though the party officially boycotted the rerun, its candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, is contesting independently. She maintains that she won the original election and has received support from some party members at the local level.

Meanwhile, the NDC’s candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, is confident of a win, claiming her party was the rightful victor in December. The NDC has campaigned actively ahead of today’s vote.

The Electoral Commission has assured the public of a credible process, with enhanced security at all polling stations.
