The Electoral Commission (EC) has decided to conduct a rerun of elections in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North constituency following disputed outcomes between the two major political parties over who won the seat in the 2024 Parliamentary polls.
This latest development comes on the back of unresolved issues concerning the final collation of results for the constituency after the December 7 polls and a lack of consensus between the EC and both parties.
In a press release dated July 2, the EC stated that the only way to address the outstanding issues regarding the final winner of the Ablekuma North seat is to rerun the polls in the identified polling stations, which were itemised in the release. The rerun has been scheduled for July 11, 2025.
The Deputy Commissioner in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey, revealed that the decision was finalized after extensive consultations between the EC and representatives of the NPP and NDC.
This paves the way for the elections management body to conduct the polls, months after misunderstandings stalled the process.
A meeting held on July 1 between key stakeholders and the EC led to this decision, setting the stage for the people of Ablekuma North to finally have a Member of Parliament in the coming days.
The long-standing dispute centred on a total of 37 pink sheets submitted by the NPP during the collation process.
The NDC argued that these documents were not foolproof and, therefore, could not be relied upon by the EC for the tabulation of the final results. However, the NPP contended that 34 out of the 37 sheets were valid, with only three having outstanding issues.
Mr. Tettey further disclosed that, although party agents from both parties had verified the pink sheets for 18 of the 37 polling stations, the EC-approved presiding officers failed to validate the results with their signatures. This led to the impasse, which is now on the verge of being resolved through the latest decision by all stakeholders.
