‘A great tree has fallen’ — Madina Zongo residents celebrate the life of Alhaji

Residents of Madina Zongo have paid emotional tribute to the late former Station Manager of Radio Univers, Dr. Abubakari Sidick Ahmed, remembering him as a respected leader, mentor and compassionate figure whose influence extended far beyond the media industry.

Popularly known as Alhaji, Dr. Ahmed passed away on Monday, February 16, 2026, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) after a short illness, leaving behind a legacy of mentorship, community service and media excellence.

The tributes were shared during Dua’a prayers held on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at his residence in Madina Zongo, where family members, colleagues, neighbours and well-wishers gathered to pray for Allah’s mercy upon his soul and reflect on his impact on their lives.

Among dignitaries present were former Vice President of Ghana,Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dodowa Chief,  Nene Okukubor II, and several other prominent personalities.

Speaking to Univers News, residents described his passing as the loss of a “great tree,” emphasising that his guidance and generosity shaped many individuals within the community and the wider media landscape.

One resident highlighted his commitment to nurturing young professionals through his work at Radio Univers.

“He always used Radio Univers as a platform to uplift others. He shaped many people in the media space into who they are today. The legacies he left behind will never die,” the resident said.

Others described him as a father figure whose presence brought unity and comfort to many families in Madina West.

“He has been a father and a grandfather to all of us here in Madina West. We have lost a big tree in Madina. May Allah grant him eternal rest,” another resident shared.

A female resident also reflected on his humility and kindness, noting that his calm and compassionate nature made him deeply loved within the community.

“Alhaji was very compassionate, kind, loving, calm and down-to-earth. He was like a father to me, and it truly saddens my heart that he is gone. May Allah grant him rest,” she said.

Residents say although his passing has left a deep void in Madina Zongo, the values of service, mentorship and humanity he embodied will continue to inspire generations.
