Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has announced plans to deploy a new surveillance technology, called “Traffic Tech”, to strengthen road safety and monitor driver conduct on Ghana’s roads.
The Minister made the announcement during the launch of the Safe Journey Campaign, a road safety sensitisation initiative organised by Somoco Ghana on 1st September 2026, with support from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the Ministry of Transport, to promote responsible road use and reduce road crashes.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Univers News, the Minister for Transport said the technology is intended to make Ghana’s roads safer for all road users.
“This is the technology we are bringing or deploying with the Police Service to help sanitise our roads, to help make our roads very safe for all of us, all the road users,” he emphasised.
He further explained that “Traffic Tech” will also be linked to a new number plate system, which will allow motorists to be identified through their vehicle registration details.
“The moment that camera captures you in any wrongful act, it will prescribe the crime you have committed, put the penalty on it, and forward it to your phone in the form of a text message.”
The Minister further warned that motorists who fail to comply with the penalties could face disciplinary measures, including sanctions that may affect their driving licences.
Traffic Tech is expected to be launched in early 2027 as part of efforts to use technology to improve enforcement and promote responsible driving on Ghana’s roads.
