2026 University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC) General Secretary aspirant, Belinda Naki Obeng, has expressed concern over what she describes as student unawareness of mental health resources on campus, revealing that an overwhelming majority of students are unaware of existing support partnerships.

Speaking during her vetting session on August 23, 2026, Obeng highlighted findings from a survey she conducted across campus, which showed that 92 per cent of respondents were unaware of the University of Ghana’s collaboration with Johnson & Johnson to promote mental health awareness.

“Did you know that the University currently has partnered with Johnson & Johnson to promote mental health on the University of Ghana campus? I conducted a semi-survey asking students about this, and 92% had no idea. That is actually alarming, considering that these same people suffer mental health challenges,” Obeng told the panel.

Obeng argued that psychological stress should be treated with the same seriousness as physical illness.

“Same way we are affected with physical ailments, we all go through some level of mental stress. So it is absolutely important to give specific attention to mental health,” Obeng emphasised.
