President of the Ghana Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Rev. Prince Baidoo, has called on the Ministry of Health and the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) to introduce front-of-pack labelling for processed and ultra-processed foods in the country.
Speaking at a conference organised by SEND Ghana in collaboration with VAST Ghana at the Accra City Hotel on Friday, June 26, 2026, Rev. Baidoo explained that front-of-pack labelling provides consumers with essential information about the food products they consume.
“Whenever we talk about front-of-pack labelling, all we are saying is that we should give people the opportunity to know what is inside the food they are eating,” he said.
Public Health Nutritionist Baaba Sam also highlighted the importance of Front-of-Pack Warning Labelling (FOPWL), stating that it encourages manufacturers to comply with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommended nutrient thresholds while helping consumers make informed food choices.
“What FOPWL does is that it encourages manufacturers to comply with the WHO cut-off points, and it helps consumers make quick decisions about what they eat,” she said.
FOPWL is a system that places simple, easy-to-read warning symbols or messages on the front of packaged foods and drinks to alert consumers when a product contains high levels of nutrients linked to health risks.
