Medeama clinch 25/26 Ghana Premier League title becoming the third team in the league to score fifty plus goals as winners

Medeama SC have etched their name into the history books of the Ghana Premier League after becoming only the third club in the 21st century to score 50 or more goals and win the league title.

In a period where goalscoring and finishing in the Ghana Premier League have often come under criticism, Medeama’s attacking brilliance has stood out, powering the club to its second league triumph in emphatic fashion.

The achievement was first recorded by Accra Hearts of Oak during the 2000/01 season when the Phobians secured their fifth consecutive league title with 64 points and 52 goals scored.

Hearts of Oak then raised the bar in the 2001/02 campaign by setting the all-time Ghana Premier League record for most goals scored in a single season after netting 72 goals and collecting 78 points to complete a historic six-peat that began in the 1996/97 season.

In the 2002/03 season, Asante Kotoko ended Hearts of Oak’s dominance under head coach Karim Abdul Razak, accumulating 75 points and scoring 52 goals to win the title.

Kotoko were nearly unstoppable that season, losing just once in 30 matches while recording 23 wins and six draws to edge out a strong Hearts of Oak side.

The Porcupine Warriors again crossed the 50-goal mark in the 2007/08 season under Bashir Hayford, scoring 53 goals in 30 matches to secure their 21st league title with a commanding 16-point lead over Hearts of Lions.

Throughout these successful campaigns, each title-winning side possessed prolific forwards capable of converting chances consistently.

During Hearts of Oak’s 2000/01 triumph, Ishmael Addo scored 22 goals, accounting for over 42 percent of the club’s total goals that season.

The following year, Bernard Dong Bortey and Charles Taylor scored 18 goals each, while Godwin Ablordey and Eric Bekoe led Kotoko’s charge in later title-winning seasons.

For Medeama, Salim Adams has emerged as the club’s leading scorer with 11 goals in the 2025/26 campaign, continuing the trend of title-winning teams producing players with double-digit goal tallies.

Medeama currently hold the fifth-best goals-per-game ratio in the Ghana Premier League this century with 1.51 goals per game, behind Hearts of Oak’s 2.4 and 1.73 ratios, as well as Asante Kotoko’s 1.76 and 1.73.

Ibrahim Tanko and his side now find themselves ranked alongside two of Ghana’s biggest clubs in achieving this remarkable feat.

Medeama could further strengthen their place in history if they score four goals against Hearts of Oak in their final league game, a result that would see them surpass Kotoko’s 53-goal tally and become the second-highest scoring team in a single Ghana Premier League season.
