Florence Agyemang wins Ghana's first medal at the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships

Florence Agyemang has won Ghana’s first medal at the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships after securing bronze in the women’s 400 metres final at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra.

The championship, which is being hosted by Ghana for the first time, saw Agyemang finish third in a time of 51.87 seconds to hand the host nation its first podium finish of the competition.

Her achievement came after Ghanaian sprinters Abdul-Rasheed Saminu and Joseph Paul Amoah narrowly missed out on medals in the men’s 100 metres final, finishing sixth and fourth respectively.

Ghana’s medal tally improved later in the day as Esther Obenewaa claimed silver in the women’s high jump after clearing 1.81 metres, while Alex Amankwah secured bronze in the men’s 800 metres.

The medals sparked excitement among home supporters as Team Ghana continued its campaign strongly in front of the local crowd at the University of Ghana Stadium.

With several events still left to compete in, Ghana will be hoping to build on the momentum and secure more podium finishes before the championship concludes in Accra.
