A decade after their fairytale title win, Leicester City F.C. have suffered back-to-back relegation dropping to the third tier of English football

A decade ago, Leicester City F.C. achieved one of the greatest feats in football history. Under Claudio Ranieri, a team widely written off as outsiders defied 5,000-to-1 odds to win the 2015/16 Premier League title — a fairytale that reshaped English football.

In the years that followed, Leicester did not fade away. Instead, they established themselves as one of the most consistent sides outside the traditional elite. Back-to-back fifth-place finishes in 2020 and 2021 underlined their progress, while their historic FA Cup triumph in 2021 marked another high point in the club’s modern era.

Yet beneath that success, structural issues were beginning to surface. Significant spending and a growing wage bill, coupled with declining player resale value, created long-term financial pressure — a problem that would eventually catch up with them.

The turning point came in 2023. A poor defensive campaign saw Leicester relegated from the Premier League for the first time in nearly a decade. Although they responded immediately by winning the Championship title in 2024 and securing promotion, the underlying issues remained unresolved.

Their return to the top flight was overshadowed by financial concerns, including the threat of a points deduction for breaches of regulations. On the pitch, performances failed to stabilize, and the club’s decline accelerated.

Now, in April 2026, the unthinkable has happened. Just ten years after lifting the Premier League trophy, Leicester City F.C. have suffered another relegation — this time dropping into the third tier of English football.

From champions of England to League One, Leicester’s story stands as a stark reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in modern football.
